Galway United today withdrew their application for a 2012 Premier Division licence after supporters pulled out of a “transitional agreement” to run the club last night.

The Galway United Supporters Trust (Gust) has now applied for a First Division licence after announcing their decision to withdraw at yesterday’s AGM.

The move could end the club's 74-year existence and see a new one formed in its place, if the supporters' application is successful.

Responding to “the extremely late decision by Gust” to pull out, club directors said today they were “left with no option but to withdraw their application for a licence for the Airtricity League 2012 season.”

A statement added: "The ensuing twelve months will allow the club to assess strategic and infrastructural changes that are required to be made ahead of an application for the 2013 season.

“A decision will then be taken as to the best route forward for soccer in Galway and discussions will take place with all stakeholders.”

Galway finished bottom of the Premier Division with just six points last season, after a campaign pockmarked by upheaval and financial difficulties. It is believed Gust did not expect the club to be granted a licence for 2012.

from rumours going around town last night it look like Galway United STFC were unsuccessful in their application. Apparently all the necessary requirements were meet but the NLEC ( Eamon Naughton,Michael Cody, Richard Collins, John Delaney and John Foley), a body which is independent from the FAI, believe that the people of Galway will rally around the 2 housing estate teams.... sad to see if true.
